A wife can sponsor her husband in Dubai on the same terms as a husband sponsors a wife: a salary of at least AED 4,000 a month, or AED 3,000 plus accommodation, a certified marriage contract and suitable housing. GDRFA's family residence page covers "both male and female" residents as sponsors and names the husband. Fees are identical. The paperwork changes only when children are involved.
Is there still a profession rule?
Many women still hear that they can sponsor a husband only if they work as a doctor, engineer or teacher. Here is what the current pages say, checked :
| Source | What it says |
|---|---|
| GDRFA family residence page | Male and female foreign residents can sponsor; the husband is listed as an eligible family member |
| GDRFA family entry permit page | Salary of AED 4,000, or AED 3,000 with housing; no profession list |
| UAE government website u.ae | Employees can sponsor family regardless of job title |
| GDRFA family entry permit page | Father's no objection letter needed if the wife sponsors the children |
So the profession test is not on the government pages any more. The conditions can change, and GDRFA's own pages say so, so if a counter raises a job requirement, ask which current service condition it comes from.
What differs when the wife sponsors
Almost nothing for the husband himself. The differences show up around him:
- Children. If you sponsor your children too, GDRFA wants the father's no objection letter. A husband who is being sponsored at the same time can sign it in the UAE.
- Your salary certificate. If you rely on the AED 3,000 plus accommodation route, ask HR to show the housing on the letter, not just the basic.
- The lease. The Ejari should be in your name, since you are the sponsor. A lease in his name from before he lost his job will not help.
- His old visa. If he was employed and sponsored by a company, that visa must be cancelled before you can sponsor him. See visa cancellation in Dubai.
Documents: the same file, with your name on it
The document list is the family list, covered in full on the spouse visa page. What changes is whose papers prove what. Your passport, residence, employment contract and salary certificate carry the file, because you are the sponsor. The Ejari or title deed should be in your name. His side is his passport, photo, medical result and, if you married abroad, the attested marriage certificate.
Two things to check before you file. First, his current status: if a company still sponsors him, that visa has to be cancelled before yours can start. Second, your salary letter: if it shows a basic under AED 4,000, it needs to show the housing too.
What it costs
The fees are identical to a wife's visa, so the full GDRFA table, the medical fees and the usual first-year total sit on the spouse visa page. In short: published price lists put a spouse's first year at about AED 4,000 to 6,500 all-in, checked .
The difference for many couples is timing. A husband is often already in Dubai when his wife becomes the sponsor, for example after his job ends, so you pay the inside-the-country charges and a status change, which price lists put at about AED 530 to 750 extra. The visa change page compares staying with flying out and back.
When his job ends: timing
A common trigger: the husband's company cancels his visa and the family needs a new sponsor.
- His employer cancels the work permit and residence.
- His grace period starts. Its length depends on his category, explained on overstay fines in Dubai.
- You file the entry permit for him from inside the UAE, then the status change.
- He takes the medical and gives biometrics. The residence follows.
If the children were on his sponsorship, their visas must be cancelled and moved to you at the same time, with his no objection letter.
Where to apply
File on the GDRFA website or app with UAE Pass, at an Amer center, or at a GDRFA customer happiness center. Find the closest on our Amer centers near you list. If your visa was issued in another emirate, the file goes to ICP instead.
Doing it yourself
The forms are the same family service as for a wife, so you can file them yourself if your papers are ready. Where people get stuck is the salary certificate wording and the timing of his old cancellation. The spouse visa page has the general route and fees; this page covers what changes when you, the wife, are the sponsor. If children are coming too, the family visa page covers their rules.
Sponsoring your husband: what the team does
Send your passport, residence, salary certificate and Ejari, plus your husband's passport, his current visa status and the marriage certificate. The partner team checks first whether his old employment visa is cancelled, whether your salary paperwork passes and whether the children need moving to your file too. Those three points hold up most husband visas. Then it types and files the entry permit and status change, books his medical, arranges Emirates ID biometrics and follows the residence to issue. You avoid fitting Amer visits around your working hours. You get one total price first, government fees and the service charge listed separately.
