If you live outside the UAE for more than 180 days in a row, your residence visa is nullified automatically. To return on it, you apply for a re-entry permit from outside the country, give a valid reason, pay the fine and enter within 30 days of approval. The UAE government website states the fine as AED 100 for every 30 days or less spent outside. Dubai residents apply through GDRFA, whose own fee line is not confirmed here; other emirates use ICP.
Who needs a re-entry permit
Anyone on a normal UAE residence who has been outside for more than 180 consecutive days and wants to come back on the same visa. The UAE government website u.ae is blunt: after 180 days abroad the residence is "nullified automatically". The permit is how you undo that while the visa is still in date.
Who does not
| Resident | Rule |
|---|---|
| Golden visa holders | Can stay out longer than six months without losing residence |
| Green and blue residence holders | ICP: may enter any time while the residence is valid |
| Husband sponsored by a UAE national woman | ICP: may enter any time while the residence is valid |
| Foreign wife of an Emirati | Listed as an exception on the u.ae government website |
| Students at universities abroad | Exception, as per Dubai rules; ICP says check your emirate |
| Residents abroad for treatment | Exception, with an approved medical report |
| Investors holding a valid residence | Listed as an exception on the u.ae government website |

| Residence validity | More than 30 days left when you apply (ICP) |

How the AED 100 fine adds up
The u.ae wording is "every 30 days or less", so a part month counts as a full one. ICP words the same charge as AED 100 for each month of delay after six months. The two descriptions count from slightly different points, and the government pages do not give a worked example. In either reading, the longer you wait, the more you pay, and the fine grows by AED 100 per block of up to 30 days.
Dubai residents: the GDRFA route
ICP's service page says plainly that its re-entry service "does not apply to residents of the Emirate of Dubai". If your residence was issued in Dubai, the request goes to GDRFA under its return permit for residents outside the UAE more than six months. The conditions reported for it match the federal ones: apply online from outside the UAE after 180 days, give a valid reason and enter within 30 days of approval.
GDRFA's own fee for this service is not shown on a page this site could confirm, so no Dubai fee is quoted here. Check it in the GDRFA app when you start the application, before you pay anything else.
ICP route for other emirates
| ICP fee | Amount |
|---|---|
| Each month of delay after six months | AED 100 |
| Smart services fee | AED 100 |

Proof that helps
- Medical reports and hospital letters, if you were treated abroad.
- A university letter or enrolment record, if you were studying.
- Travel records showing you could not return, for example cancelled flights.
- A letter from your sponsor, if your employer kept you abroad for work.
The decision rests on the reason, so a clear document set is worth more than a long explanation.
When a re-entry permit will not work
- Your residence has expired. The permit only revives a valid visa. You need a new entry permit and residence from your sponsor.
- Less than 30 days left. ICP will not accept the request. Your sponsor may be better off renewing, see visa renewal in Dubai, or starting fresh.
- You are already in the UAE. You cannot apply from inside.
- Your sponsor cancelled your visa. There is nothing left to re-enter on.
If family members you sponsor were also abroad for more than 180 days, check each of their files too. Their visas cannot outlast yours.
After you land
The permit gets you in. It does not extend the visa. If the residence is close to expiry, renew it straight away. Check that no other fine is waiting on your file with the GDRFA fines inquiry, and use our visa status check page to confirm the file shows as valid. A different fine, for staying in the UAE after a visa ends, is covered on our overstay fine page.
Applying to come back after 180 days
Send your passport, residence details, the date you left the UAE and proof of the reason you stayed away. The partner team checks first whether your residence still qualifies, how much validity is left and whether the GDRFA or ICP route applies, because Dubai residents cannot use the ICP service. It prepares the request, uploads the proof, follows the approval and tells you the last day you can fly in. A family member who was also away gets filed at the same time. You do not need to work the portal from abroad. One total price comes before anything is filed, with the fine, the government fees and the service charge itemised.
